The venue

Manchester's premier independent home for heavy rock

Rebellion Club is the largest independent venue of its type in Greater Manchester, serving as a vital city-centre staple for the UK’s metal, rock, and punk scenes for more than a decade. The 520-capacity club regularly hosts energetic headline sets from a rotating roster of raw underground bands and heavy international touring acts that demand intense, concert-level audio.

“I’ve always thought Electro-Voice was good quality. I’ve always been a fan of EV equipment, so it seemed natural... The bands coming through see an EV point-source system and they’re happy as Larry, especially the American bands.”

The challenge

Low ceilings and a "boot-shaped" brick acoustic trap

The physical footprint of the venue presented a notoriously hostile environment for live sound reinforcement. Built inside a brick building shaped like a boot, the space suffered from severe acoustic reflections off the wall directly opposite the stage, monitor slapback hitting the rear wall, and massive low-hanging structural beams adding more hard, disruptive surfaces.

Furthermore, the ceiling height was far too low to accommodate a standard line-array setup, forcing the venue to find a highly directional point-source system that could cut through dense reverberation without muddying the mix.

  • Combating harsh, muddy reflections from a boot-shaped brick layout and low-hanging structural beams

  • Overcoming severe microphone and stage monitor slapback off the wall behind the performers

  • Inadequate ceiling clearance that ruled out a traditional line-array speaker hang

  • Replacing an aging house PA that lacked the top-end clarity to overcome the room’s natural reverb

The solution

High-clarity point-source clusters with a tight cardioid low-end

Rebellion opted for a high-output Electro-Voice point-source infrastructure tailored to the existing rigging points. The main front-of-house clusters comprise two EVF-1152D cabinets on either side of the stage, supplemented by an EVF-1122D for rear fill and three compact EVU-1062 boxes for front lip fill.

To keep the low-end energy punchy and focused on the crowd rather than bleeding back onto the stage, four dual-18” X12-128 subwoofers were deployed in a directional cardioid configuration. Onstage sound is handled by six MFX-15MC multi-use coaxial wedges, and the entire system is driven by eight Dynacord L3600FD dual-channel DSP amplifiers managed entirely via SONICUE software.

  • Electro-Voice EVF-1152D & 1122D Loudspeakers: Premium point-source cabinets that deliver exceptional high-frequency clarity to slice through room reverb
  • 4 Electro-Voice X12-128 Subwoofers: Run in cardioid mode to direct massive bass energy forward while keeping the stage quiet
  • 6 MFX-15MC Coaxial Wedges: Low-profile stage monitors providing sharp, accurate foldback mixes for the artists
  • 8 Dynacord L3600FD DSP Amplifiers: Pumping out reliable dual-channel power with onboard speaker processing and presets
  • SONICUE Sound System Software: Streamlined the daily system configuration, tuning, and frequency management

“It’s a horrible space to put a PA into... There was a clarity issue with the old system, but it’s really clear now. We’ve been able to put in enough sound and clarity to overwhelm the reverb. I’m absolutely made up with it and all my engineers are super-happy with it.”

The result

Intense, ear-pleasing clarity at a lower overall volume

The acoustic overhaul has brought dramatic, night-and-day improvements to the Manchester landmark. By delivering a pristine, ultra-fast high-end transient response, the new system completely overwhelms the room's natural reflections.

Acoustically, engineers are finding that they can actually run the venue roughly 3 dB quieter than before, yet the mix feels significantly bigger, fuller, and louder due to the massive increase in high-end definition and the elimination of muddy bass buildup.

  • Overcame severe structural and architectural acoustic boundaries without altering the room's layout

  • Pristine vocal and instrument definition that cuts through the club's heavy natural brick reverberation

  • Achieved a cleaner, higher-impact perceived volume while safely reducing actual SPL levels by 3 dB

  • Received outstanding feedback from local engineers and visiting international touring acts alike

“For me as a sound engineer, it is lightyears different; it’s such a nice thing to listen to now. We used to run at about 105 dB, but now I tend to run at about 102 dB and it feels louder – it feels like there’s more there than the SPL meter is telling me. It’s to do with the clarity of the top end.”
